Manta Point is a popular dive site located on the south coast of Nusa Penida. The journey from the resort is long, and it takes us 75 minutes by car to Padang Bai, where the dive boat departs for Nusa Penida. It takes another 50 minutes to reach this place. The arrival is varied and offers a few highlights. On the way to Padang Bai, we pass the rice terraces of Tirta Gannga, which offer a breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, the south coast area of the island of Nusa Penida offers an impressive view through the steep rock formations. Water is constantly moving here due to waves and currents, which allows us to experience the spectacular power of nature.
An average depth of 12 meters makes the Manta Point dive suitable for all levels of diving experience. The entry is from the boat with a backwards roll and a descent to the desired diving depth. However, currents are rare, but large waves, cold water, and poor visibility can pose a challenge.
The objective of the dive is to find a small rock under the water. On this rock, small cleaner fish offer a special service and help to free the large rays from parasites. and help to free the large rays from parasites. The manta rays swim to the station to be cleaned, but then disappear back into the ocean. They often return and repeat the procedure. As soon as we have identified their habits, we position ourselves so that the manta rays swim past us as closely as possible. This is a truly unforgettable experience.
Luckily, it's rare that we don't spot manta rays there. But it is also possible to have a great dive without encountering manta rays. The rocky seabed is home to different types of corals. We can find numerous species of tropical fish here, as usual on Bali dive sites. It is also not unusual for a bamboo shark to hide among the rocks. The sandy areas of the bay are home to numerous stingrays. But nothing can surpass the show of the big fish, and we hope to be able to meet at least one of the gentle giants on every tour.
Known as the Crystal Bay, it is a bay of Nusa Penida with a small offshore island. It takes us 30 minutes by speedboat from Padang Bai to reach the bay. Due to the location of the bay directly next to the waterway between Nusa Penida and Lembongan, there are special conditions here. Currents are often strong and can be easily recognized by the strong turbulence at the surface.
Typically, the dive begins with a free descent to 15 meters of depth. The visibility at Crystal Bay is mostly excellent, as the name suggests. Upon our descent, we dive along the reef of a small offshore island in the direction of the waterway. The rise of cold water from the depths of the sea can cause the formation of thermoclines. Temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius are not uncommon, and a long wetsuit can help you stay warm. However, the cold water increases the likelihood of sunfish sightings enjoying the bannerfish cleaning service above the reef. These conditions are more common during the season between August and late October. There are strong currents that can occur at this dive site. Even with good planning, it is possible that we will end the dives prematurely.
However, we usually return to the bay, which has beautiful coral growth in shallow water between five and ten meters deep. Many special inhabitants of the tropical seas, such as frogfish, stonefish, sea snakes, various types of nudibranchs or octopuses, have already been discovered here. Good conditions allowed us to end the dive here relaxed and bring us back safely to the dive boat.
This site requires a good diving experience, especially when diving towards the waterway. But the bay also has good conditions for beginners and snorkelers.
Located on the south side of Nusa Penida, is the dive site SD. Within 30 minutes, we reach this place by speedboat from Padang Bai. SD is an abbreviation for 'Sekolah Dara', which means something like 'elementary school.' This is an unspectacular name for a dive site, which is why we call the site “Strong Drift.” This site is good for drift dives because strong currents are possible and there are miles of shoreline to follow the current. Our dive begins with a free descent to a depth of 15 meters. The current conditions determine the direction of the dive.
The waters in this region usually offer good visibility, which allows us to have an unobstructed view of the diverse underwater world. On our dive, we encounter large blocks that are overgrown with different corals. There is an extensive growth of hard corals in some places. Thousands of anthias inhabit this area, which seek protection from predators. We sometimes see turtles and sharks here. Drifting through this beautiful underwater landscape gives us a sense of flying. However, it is important to have adequate buoyancy control to avoid damage to the reef. With strong currents, we can drift for several kilometers.
Even though the currents can be strong, we recommend this site for divers of all levels. Combined with our qualified instructors and many years of experience, we offer an unforgettable and safe experience in drift diving, even for beginners.
